About Us

We created the word. It’s a hybrid of determination and resilience.

WHO we are

MORE THAN A WORD

We created the word – it’s a hybrid of determination and resilience. It’s so much more than one particular effort; It’s a way of life.

Determination of the mind, resilience of the body. It’s making your mind up to hit the mark, reach the top, cross the finish line no matter what. Followed by the resilience needed in your body to do so. Run another mile, summit another peak, swim another lap. Life isn’t easy. There is always a reason to quit. But we don’t dwell on those.

De:terminence is a nonprofit community that turns hard circumstances into meaningful momentum. We raise awareness, restore hope, and bring people together to take on bold challenges — proving that rare disease and disability may change the path, but they don’t erase the summit.

At our core, de:terminence brings people together. Able-bodied community members rally around those who need support — offering encouragement, muscle, equipment, funding, or hands-on help — to ensure no one is kept from a meaningful physical challenge because they need a little extra assistance. We show up as spotters, pushers, pullers, and problem-solvers so everyone has the chance to experience the beauty and power of physical achievement.

Our able-bodied team members don’t just lend strength — many also fundraise to provide the gear, resources, and financial support required to help another person reach their goal. Their work reduces barriers so the only thing left is the challenge itself.

EVERYONE DESERVES A PATH TO THE SUMMIT

The Finish Line Grant Program was created to open doors — not just to events, but to possibility. Many people living with rare disease or disability want to take on a physical challenge, but the financial barriers can be overwhelming: specialized equipment, travel, registration fees, mobility support, or the additional resources needed to participate safely.

This grant helps remove those barriers. We provide financial assistance so individuals can pursue the climb, ride, race, or adventure that inspires them. When someone raises their hand and says, “I want to try,” the answer shouldn’t depend on what’s in their bank account.

The Finish Line Grant Program turns community support into opportunity — giving every person the chance to move forward, feel strong, and cross a finish line they once thought was out of reach.

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY

Discover the Benefits of Being Part of Our Community

Restore Hope

Our world is plagued with over 10,000 rare diseases, affecting 30mil people in the U.S. and 300mil around the globe. Too often, those diagnosed are devastated and feel hopeless. This can be especially true for those whose diagnosis has little or no research efforts to help fight the condition.

Ignite Momentum

In the face of a rare progressive disease that threatens mobility, de:terminence launched with the mission to help others live beyond their diagnosis or disease. Being told you can't do something fuels us toward achievement. Our achievement may look different, but it always feels the same.

Strengthen Confidence

Confidence grows when people experience success — even small ones — in physical challenges. We create the environment, support, and resources needed so each person can safely push their limits. With every step or summit reached, their belief in themselves expands.

Empower Achievement

Whether using a wheelchair, handcycle or the need of other adaptive tools, we seek to foster achievement through procuring necessary equipment, resources, teammates or just a loud fan club in order to help people complete a 5k, marathon, climb a mountain or cycle across the country.

SUPPORT THE MOVEMENT

It’s about proving that when we show up for ourselves and each other, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.

OUR LEADERSHIP

De:terminence was founded by Sean Baumstark shortly after being diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia in 2007. This rare, debilitating, degenerative neuromuscular disease is slowly robbing Sean of many physical abilities.

With the help of friends and family, Sean launched this movement in order to help others cross finish lines.
